The Winter Park area was originally inhabited by the nomadic tribes of the Arapaho and Ute. First settled in 1923, the town started as a construction camp during the building of the Moffat Tunnel, a railroad and water tunnel that cuts through the Continental Divide and connects the Western Slope with Denver. This settlement was named West Portal. The Moffat Tunnel provided Denver with a way to access the mountains, and starting in 1938, a ski train started regular weekend service to the area. The local ski area was opened in 1940, and the resort was officially renamed Winter Park.
Located only 67 miles from Denver, Winter Park and the surrounding Grand County are the most accessible way to explore the real, authentic Colorado outdoors. The area is an outdoor playground during all seasons, and residents and visitors alike are drawn to the wide array of trails, wilderness areas, lakes, rivers, hunting areas, hot springs, and state parks that it has to offer
Winter Park is a family-friendly cold-weather playground. The Winter Park Ski area is Colorado’s longest continuously running resort, and with over 3,000 skiable acres, there are trails and off-piste adventures for all levels of skiers. In 2016, the popular “ski train” resumed service, shuttling skiers and boarders from Denver’s Union Station right to the base of the resort on weekends. For those who prefer off-mountain activities, there are guided snowmobile tours up the Continental Divide, snowshoeing, dog sledding, snow tubing, cross country skiing, and sleigh rides. If being cold isn’t your thing, venture out to Hot Sulphur Springs, where hot springs line the canyon along the Colorado River.
Don’t be fooled by the name… Winter Park is a spectacular summer destination! The mountain provides over 600 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and the town is always bustling with a variety of summer events, like the Winter Park Beer Festival, the High Country Stampede Rodeo, and the Winter Park Jazz Festival. In the surrounding areas, there is world-class elk hunting and fly fishing, and the Rocky Mountain National Park offers just about every activity you could dream up in the great outdoors—from boating on Grand Lake, to rafting on the Colorado River, to breathtaking wildlife encounters.
